Situated along the banks of the Rock River, downtown Sterling continues to build momentum as a vibrant destination in Northwest Illinois. Focusing on community events, downtown beautification efforts and small business support for our mom & pop shops, Sterling Main Street - a volunteer-driven, nonprofit - organizes a number of community-wide events each year, including a car show, music festival, free outdoor summer movie series, shop hops and our community Christmas walk. Its beautification efforts include annual clean up events and the installation of lamppost flower baskets throughout the downtown each summer. Main Street also coordinates the year-round Twin City Farmers Market open every Saturday morning, and serves as the steward to preserve and promote the 20 historic, hand-painted murals which adorn the walls of many downtown buildings. Also situated in the heart of Downtown Sterling lies Central Memorial Park, home to the Grandon Civic Center, a 1938 band shell reminiscent of the famed Hollywood Bowl. Every Wednesday evening throughout the summer the park offers Music Under the Stars, free concerts performed by the Sterling Municipal Band. Downtown Sterling offers a wide variety of shopping, dining, services and nightlife. The iconic tower of the historic Sterling Theater, now a local brew-n-view, is its beacon every Friday and Saturday night. We invite you to come along with us on this journey to rediscover downtown Sterling, Illinois.
