Leadville's past weaves an almost unbelievable tale, of tenacious ambition and the pioneer spirit, which drove the American West. Situated at 10,152ft elevation, Leadville is the highest incorporated City of North America. In recent years, community members have been actively pursuing economic strength and stability. Partly as a result of these efforts, the city was designated a "Colorado Main Street" community; however, the important improvements are just beginning. Just over a year old, the Leadville Main Street program has been making these economic strides! We love hearing testimonials from residents who are shopping Leadville and have heard that our program and projects have been the most visible thing business owners have seen in years. We love our work, and we love our city. This means we will continuously seek any opportunity that we believe will make our community stronger. Leadville experiences about 8 months of winter and mud season; obviously it takes endurance to operate a year round business during an exceptionally long winter season. The Leadville Main Street program wants to bolster Leadville's winter tourism economy by attracting resident's downtown and drawing in tourists. This means communicating with our businesses what the Leadville Main Street program is doing and how they can utilize these tools. Leadville Main Street's strategy is to jump into the world of placemaking and make our city a winter destination. This means reimagining creatively, our ageing spaces along Harrison Avenue. Our retail core must maintain the historic integrity, while adapting spaces to be more relevant and accessible. It's all about building an authentic experience and leveraging downtown as an asset. This contest would help our program and downtown continue this exciting momentum. It takes strategic partnerships, passion, and perseverance to reimagine and build strong communities, winning the America's Main Streets Contest is a powerful opportunity!
