Downtown Jesup is a beautiful downtown that has seen some revitalization in the past few years. We are a resilient community. Throughout the last decade our downtown has faced many obstacles, including the devastation of an entire block of downtown being destroyed in a fire. This event could have easily crippled our Main Street, yet the investors chose to rebuild. Our historic downtown movie theatre was closed for nearly a decade, and in 2016 it was renovated and re-opened. Our theatre is now thriving and attracting visitors from throughout the Southeast. Our community has overcome a lot, and we are dedicated to seeing its continued growth. We are working to make our small, rural community a destination. We face the difficulty that millennials and younger generations are gravitating to metro areas in Georgia, like Atlanta and Savannah. Through our recent master planning process, we found one of the strategies to address urbanization is adding attractions for young families in our downtown. We are working to create a beautiful greenspace in the middle of our downtown. For over 40 years, this space has been occupied as a rail yard staging area for a railroad company. Through many hours of negotiations, the railroad has agreed to lease the City this space. Our goal is to create an area for visitors and locals to enjoy. This area will also provide us a place to host events, while we currently do not have any greenspace in downtown. Our hope is that this project will be a catalyst for continued development in downtown Jesup.
