First Street in downtown Benicia, Ca. is the heart and soul of our town, a quaint waterfront community in the San Francisco Bay Area. Nearly 35 events occur annually on First Street, drawing residents and visitors downtown to enjoy the special friendly atmosphere with a thriving arts community, rich California history as the former State Capitol, and 12 blocks of unique boutiques and restaurants, all independently owned. Benicia Main Street, is one of Benicia's visitor centers and is located at the foot of First Street on the waterfront in the historic Southern Pacific Depot building. Achieving California Main Street designation, Benicia Main Street strives to reinvigorate and maintain the economic health of Benicia's central business district. Of the 35 events occurring on First Street throughout the year, 25 are hosted by Benicia Main Street, bringing residents and visitors alike to downtown. Benicia Main Street has been in need of additional room in the Southern Pacific Depot for many years. If we were chosen as the winner we would use the prize as matching funds for a grant for ADA (Americans with Disabilities) access to the freight room in the depot, giving us the opportunity to utilize nearly 1,122 sq. ft. of space.
