Clarence, Iowa is one of the newest members of the Main Street America family having been selected in August 2017. This small town in eastern Iowa sits in the heart of Cedar County within an hour of metropolitan areas Iowa City, Cedar Rapids and Davenport. It is the smallest Main Street Iowa community, sporting a population of 974. Clarence is in the very beginning stages of rehabilitation of its Main Street district. We raised the required funding to support the first year of organization and additional pledges to support the next two years. What we have yet to accomplish is raising funds to support some basic projects that would help clean up store fronts, sidewalks and vacant buildings and make our district SHINE. Our town is a "show me community" and residents want to see progress before they invest financially. If we could complete a few very visual projects we know that this would spur many others. The funding and supplies this grant would provide would allow us to spread improvements throughout the district rather than use for one individual building or business. US Highway 30/the Historic Lincoln Highway passes directly through our Main Street district and over 3,500 vehicles travel this road every day. Opportunity abounds for us if we bring this corridor back to life. Currently there are 20 small businesses within the district and four of those opened within the past year. Potential for growth in both business locations and upper level housing are available but not until rehabilitation is completed. First impressions are so important especially when you have just a moment or two as someone is driving down the road. We have a dedicated group of volunteers that believe that Clarence Main Street is worth investing in and we hope you will as well.
