Elkin's downtown is transforming into a fun, quirky, colorful place, full of character and characters, and is starting to rebound from the late 1990's when its textile mill closed and brought the downtown to a halt. Today, we're reinventing ourselves as a new trail town with kayaking services and an off-road trails system that will soon connect our downtown with two state parks. We're situated in the center of the Yadkin Valley Wine Region (AVA), and downtown is known for the newly renovated Reeves Theater, which provides a unique and diverse music scene every weekend for visitors to enjoy. Investments in downtown continue, but being a small town of 4000 we struggle but are working hard to make a difference in many ways. We have a downtown Municipal Service District (MSD) tax that helps with maintenance costs and other small projects, however having funds to invest in downtown without MSD restrictions would be a blessing, as we could help building owners trying to save our historic buildings that can't find or qualify for grants. Saving a historic building's exterior (repointing old bricks) or repairing an interior that has been ruined by a leaking roof, bringing empty buildings up to code, or developing much needed downtown apartments in the empty upper levels are a few of our issues that would make a difference in saving our treasured buildings that were neglect by previous owners. We need these buildings fixed for future retail & economic development. Our downtown is cherished, is friendly, cozy and charming, and the buildings we still have left (many were lost to fires or floods in the 1900's), hold fond memories for many generations. We hope to keep them around for many more to come & provide future businesses a space that is ready for their success.
