Located in north central Louisiana, downtown Homer is centered around our historic 1861 courthouse, the oldest antebellum courthouse still in use as a functioning courthouse. Our downtown also includes gems such as the Herbert S. Ford museum of local history and culture. While containing many jewels, this beautiful picturesque town also has many challenges including vacant and deteriorating buildings that mar our nationally registered historic district. Main Street Homer is working to make downtown Homer vibrant! As a non-profit organization, our mission is to revitalize downtown Homer through economic and cultural development, historic preservation, and advancement of the arts. If chosen as contest winner, the $25,000 prize will help fund Main Street Homer's current projects to revitalize downtown Homer including: (1) Renovating three buildings adjacent to the new Alabama Kinnebrew downtown park. The building adjacent to the park will be made into a reception hall for park use including bathrooms and a kitchenette. The remaining two buildings will be renovated and put back into productive use for the community. (2) Continuing to enhance the outdoor amenities in the park to make it a beautiful space for our citizens to enjoy. (3) Continuing to support the arts by providing art education and assisting in the development of art-based businesses. (4) Continuing to enhance the beauty of our town with art-based projects such as our recent downtown art trashcans. (5) Promoting small business development. In addition to these projects, funding will help support our regular operations which include hosting art and cultural events for our community and supporting property owners in obtaining federal and state tax credits and grants to restore their historic buildings. Thank you for joining in our efforts by voting for Main Street Homer as your favorite main street today. Together we can make Homer happen!
