The Village of South Amherst, incorporated in 1918, is the home of the "World's Largest Sandstone Quarry". From humble beginnings of the village where individuals came to work and live, it is now an iconic example of a small town in the United States. South Amherst is populated with diverse and kind people. Although not large in size and population, it has all the amenities of bigger municipalities. A police and fire department, a community park, recreation board, a cemetery, water department, and service department are entities that provide for the quality of life of the residents. The Village is located within the Firelands School District. It is ideally located with ease of access to the Ohio Turnpike and interstates I-90 and I-480. The Village of South Amherst has the uniqueness to offer the amenities of both a rural and urban setting in which to live and raise a family. Any prizes from winning America's Main Street would go to the beautification and signage of our main street.
