In 2014, a single business closed on our Main Street but it occupied 12 storefronts owned by one family! Most of these buildings are brick century old buildings with lots of charm and potential but in need of major upgrading to comply with current building codes. The current owner has worked hard to market and sell his buildings. Our organization and the owner have apply for grants but they can never be used for improvement of privately held physical property. Through the Orten Foundation Heart and Soul process it was verified that the community wants and needs businesses including a home cooking family restaurant, a daycare center, a coffee shop/bakery, etc. but investors are scared off by the potential return on investment and current conditions. One pioneering business, The McComb Emporium, has proven that a business can be successful. We just need to get these buildings in a state that will help the owner sell or rent them. Winning this contest would be used to develop matching funds to take care of the worst of the impediments to development.
