Nestled between the serenity of the Neuse River and the vitality of Interstate 95, Downtown Smithfield is the economic, cultural, and social center of our community. The center of government, enhanced by thriving, independently owned businesses, Downtown Smithfield is a great American Main Street. On our "Main Street," you'll find fantastic restaurants, great independent retailers, the Johnston County Heritage Center, and the Ava Gardner Museum, which attracts visitors from across the globe to learn about the Hollywood starlet that called Smithfield home. Around the corner is the oldest continuously operating movie theatre in North Carolina, more excellent restaurants and retailers, a historic home with ties to the Civil War, and a 3-mile greenway along the banks of the river. Just outside downtown, stroll through two historic neighborhoods with tree-lined streets and friendly neighbors who wave from the front porch. Our downtown plays host to many special events throughout the year to engage our residents and visitors. The Smithfield Ham & Yam Festival is held the first weekend in May and honors our agricultural history as a top producer of country hams and sweet potatoes. Join us to try foods like country ham biscuits, sweet potato cheesecake pie, sweet potato funnel cakes with country ham toppings, country ham macaroni and cheese, sweet potato smoothies, and more! In the summer, there's the Ava Gardner Festival, Rhythm & Brews concert series, the River Rat Regatta, a cardboard boat race on the Neuse, and our Independence Celebration. The fall brings us the Historical Ghost Walk, Touch-A-Truck, and the Wine Walk. We close the year with our Christmas events, lights twinkling in trees and on poles running the length of Downtown, for our tree lighting, parade, and free carriage rides with Santa. Come join us in Downtown Smithfield; we're on the river, on the way!
