The town of Saco, Maine (pop. 19,000+) is a coastal mill town recovering, like many, from a forgone industrial era. The Saco Main Street organization's mission is to grow a vibrant, inviting city by encouraging innovation and economic development. We spearhead collaborative efforts to support businesses and diversify the economy, stimulate tourism and tell Saco's story. We have made great strides but we continue to forge forward. Our Saco River was once very polluted and unattractive. It is now a great asset to the region but due to the past poor condition of the river parks have been neglected and are in need of improvements to activate them with music and other outdoor recreational activities. This grant would allow us to make great improvements to two parks, Diamond Park and Jubilee Island. These improvements would focus on physical accessibility for all groups, abilities and ages. We have an underserved lower income, aged and physically challenged population that lives in our downtown near Jubilee island. Currently the small two-acre island has a cute covered bridge for access but once on the island there are no accessible paths. We want to create wide, accessible crushed stone paths with additional benches and river viewing spots. Additionally, we will be programing local musicians for the enjoyment of nearby residents and visitors to our downtown. In Diamond Park, an older 10+ acre park, we want to improve the trails, add benches and remove non-native undergrowth to provide spots for viewing the river and family fishing. Both parks need better signage and identification and solar lighting for evening use. These improvements will take work, which we are not afraid of, but open green spaces such as this will never lose their social and economic value and will be a true asset to Saco forever.
