Funds are investment seeds which we use to grow a better community for the next generation. Clayton MainStreet pursues numerous projects, from early literacy to economic revitalization, to help make Clayton a better hometown. If we win, these funds would be invested into desperately needed housing project for employees, downtown economic redevelopment of heritage places, and business incubation. As the wise adage says, we would diversify these funds to fuel not one but several projects evolving our downtown to have a place in our community's future. Clayton MainStreet's pride and joy is the historic Luna Theatre, the century-plus heritage business which anchors our downtown and provides a community entertainment focal point. Now, we seek to renovate other historical buildings, turning them from empty shells into thriving businesses, hoping to answer community needs with housing, youth and family activities, and new economic activity. Our community buildings are megaliths into our common heritage and history; we seek to preserve them as John Henrik Clarke says, 'History is a compass people use to find themselves on the map of human geography. It tells them where they are but, more importantly, what they must be,' and that is why our building renovation is so important, so these cultural stone-stories of our past will have a place in our future telling their stories of 'who we are', and 'where do we come from' to the next generation.
